SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCES

Recipient of the Silver Star for gallantry in action on February 2, 1945 near Neuhof, Germany.  Lt. Wheeler commanded the platoon which led the assault on the Siegfried Line.  When his lead scout was halted by an enemy machine gun emplaced  inside the dragon's teeth, Wheeler moved up with a bazooka team.  In crawling up to the emplacement, the bazooka gunner was killed and the assistant gunner and Lt. Wheeler were wounded.  Wheeler refused to be evacuated, but remained at the head of his platoon for five hours until the company's mission of securing a portion of the town was successfully completed.  His bravery and determination were a magnificent example to his men and contributed materially to the accomplishment of the Division's mission.

He and his wife, Edith, lived in the Villa Homes in the winter months.
