SIGNIFICANT EXPERIENCES

Henry joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and became a Heavy Equipment Mechanic and first served overseas in the North African Campaign.  When Allied Forces successfully concluded that major effort he was sent to Sicily off the Italian coast.  After Sicily was secured, Henry participated in the invasion of the Anzio Beach Head in Italy.

His Commanders were General George Patton and General Mark Clark.  Fluent in Italian he later became an interpreter for the Army spending time with a platoon of Italian Prisoners of War. 

Henry saw action in Naples, Foggia, North Apennines, Rome,  and Arno, Italy as well as Sicily.  In North Africa - Algeria, Mazagran, and Oran.

 He and his wife, Selma, lived in the Villa Homes.

Henry 2.jpg (7443 bytes)Henry Zemel passed away at Lexington on August 30, 2004 and was buried in the Ft. Myers Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
