Significant Experiences

  • Started out as an Apprentice Seaman in 1942 assigned to the V - 2 Program.  Later reported to Columbia University in the V -12 Program and finally to midshipman's school and graduated as an Ensign.

  • At Miami, U.S. Naval Officers trained with Russian, Brazilian and Chinese officers.  In both Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, I trained in air-sea rescue and boat handling.

  • In New Smyrna, Florida, I was assigned to patrolling pilot training gunnery practice ranges in case a plane went down at sea.  I was the ready duty boat when the Navy mysteriously lost 5 planes in the so-called Bermuda Triangle.  So far as I know we were the only crash boat searching in the Cape Canaveral area.  Searched 10 hours, consumed 1300 gallons of fuel, and returned with 200 gallons.  Some of our searches were also conducted in wetlands/swamps when a plane crashed during a landing approach.

  • In April 1945 I reported with boat and 6 man crew to NAS Mayport.  Patrol area was from Fernandina to St. Augustine.  On July 9, 1946 I was ordered to New York for inactive reserve duty until May 1954.
